二、写作练习  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
1. Read the following descriptions of Midtown High School and John Jay High  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
school; two schools in which Olivia, who moved during the summer and is  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
entering her junior year, is consid-ering enrolling. Then, in the space  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
provided, write an argument for the choice you think Olivia should make. The  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
following considerations should guide your thinking;  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
(1) Olivia wants a curriculum that will prepare her for college.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
(2) Olivia wants to participate in extracurricular activity, particularly  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
gymnastics.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
(3) Olivia is worried that she will not make friends quickly.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
Midtown High School has a student body of 10,000, and average class size is  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
35 to 37. Be- cause it is a large school, Midtown offers a wide variety of  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
courses, including vocational training and advanced courses in chemistry,  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
physics and math. Each year students from Midtown capture several of the  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
state’s top academic awards. Midtown offers a wide range of extracurricular  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
activi- ties, and its gymnastics team placed third in state competition last  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
year.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
John Jay High School has a student body of 2,000, and average class size is  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
15 to 17. The  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
school was established to offer academically challenging courses for talented  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
students. In the se- nior year, a student is allowed to register for courses  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
at the community coliege across the street from John Jay. Because the primary  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
focus of the school is on academics, its few clubs are orient- ed toward  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
areas of academic interest; for example, the school has a Science Club, a  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
Math Club, and a Latin Club. Last year, one of the teachers, a former collegeã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ

make friends e  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
and third, she will have the opportunity to participate in gymnastics.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
John Jay will prepare Olivia for the challenges of college in two respects.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
The coui  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
John Jay are designed for talented students, so they must be difficult.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
Additionally, in her year, Olivia can learn firsthand what college is like.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
Olivia will have the opportunity to make friends at John Jay because the size  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
of the s’  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
body is not overwhelmingly large. Moreover, the fact that the average class  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
size is only fift seventeen students suggests that classes will not be very  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
formal.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
Finally, John Jay has a relatively new gymnastics team, so Olivia should be  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
able to f  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
pate in many events. Further, she will be able to learn by watching college  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
gymnasts pra(  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
Although Midt’own does offer some advantages, Olivia would be better able to  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
achie  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
goals at John Jay.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
2. Read the following proposals of Johnson and Edwards, two members of the  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
vill Coventry Town Council, who have to decide how to spend the $ 100, 000  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
that Mrs. Wh left the village in her will. Then in the space provided, write  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
an argument in favor of the pi you think the Town Council should choose. The  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
following considerations must be taken ii count:  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
( I ) The will stipulates that the money must be used for the benefit of the  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
children of l  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
try.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
(2) The Town Council wants to spend the money on a project that will benefit  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
busi Coventry.  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
JOHNSON has proposed that the money be used for a park. Part of the park will  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
b<side as a play area for children and their parents. At present, there is a  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
schoolyard in the and an athletic field but not any playground. The park also  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
include picnic shelters that ci used by families. The land for the park isã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ

money be used to build a special children’s wing on th library. At present,  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
there is a children’s room in the library, but it is small. The nui books  ã7`j’&def€¹forum.pre-mbaclub.com4K¨H ÂÝ
