(1)THE personal computer spawned[1] a new industry. But many of the firms that initially flourished in the PC era are now finding life difficult. Dell, the leading PC-maker, issued a profit warning last week that sent its share-price to a five-year low. Intel is trying to regain ground lost to AMD, its increasingly confident competitor. Microsoft has just announced that it will buy back 8% of its shares for around $20 billion—a sign that its high-growth days are behind it.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
(2)But none of these firms is in mortal danger. That is more than can be said for many of the smaller firms of a similar vintage[2] to the PC. Novell's two top executives departed in June following a string of poor results. Silicon Graphics filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May. 3Com replaced its boss earlier this year following lacklustre[3] performance. Borland shed one-fifth of its workforce and is preparing to sell the best-known part of its business; this month its finance chief r_______①.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

Novell prospered by selling networking software to link up computers and enable group-working. Yet the firm failed to keep up with its rivals, c_______③ Microsoft and IBM. Silicon Graphics, founded in 1982, makes sophisticated computers for modelling things such as cars and aeroplanes. But as PCs became more powerful, the firm was wrongfooted[4] by the shift to commoditised hardware: its last profitable year was 1999. (5)Companies that start off with a wildly successful product often fail to stay the course, explains Jim Collins, the author of “Built to Last”. “If you have a great idea, it creates a false sense that you are stronger and more successful than you actually are,” he says. ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

(译注:按照Longman注解,wildly一词有两个意思,一是“in a very uncontrolled or excited way”,即“失控地,兴奋地,狂热地”,二是“extremely”,即“极度,非常”。 ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

American consumers like convenience very much. much. During the last 50 years, there has been a dramatic increase in such labor-saving devices as automatic washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers, food processors, microwave ovens, garbage disposals and power lawn mowers. Today, all of these and many more, are found in a typical suburban home. These labor-saving devices are designed to reduce the time spent on housework. However, the time that Americans save is quickly spent on other activities.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
The American desire for convenience also created the concept of fast-food restaurants, found in every city and almost every small town in the United States, and now exported all over the world. These fast-food restaurants, such as McDonald's and KFC, serve sandwiches, salads, fried chicken, seafood, and other food to hurried customers in five minutes or less, often at a drive-up window. There are also a wide variety of restaurants that will deliver Chinese food, pizza, and other dishes to people's homes in about a half-hour. In many areas there are take-out taxis that will deliver food from the menus of 20 or 30 different restaurants for a small charge. For those who prefer to prepare their food at home, American grocery stores are full of convenience foods that are packaged and ready to cook or' even precooked.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
Like microwave ovens and dishwashers, fast-food and take-out restaurants are convenient because they save the American consumer time that would otherwise be spent fixing meals or cleaning up. More than half of all the women in the United States are currently employed. This includes mothers with children under the age of 18. More than half the women with little children under the age of six hold jobs. Sixty-eight percent of the women who have school-age children are employed. Families with working mothers need all the time-savers they can get.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
Thus, the conveniences that Americans desire reflect not so much a leisurely lifestyle as a busy lifestyle in which even minutes of time are too valuable to be wasted. Alexis de Tocqueville was one of the first to see in this a curious paradox ( 自相矛盾) in the American character. He observed that Americans were so busy working to acquire comforts and conveniences that they were unable to relax and to enjoy leisure time when they had it. Today, many Americans have what one medical doctor has called the hurry sickness.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

venkatmba - 2008-7-31 22:21:00
Mass transportation revised the social and economic fabric of the American city in three fundamental ways. It catalyzed physical expansion, it sorted out people and land uses, and it accelerated the inherent instability of urban life. By opening vast areas of unoccupied land for residential expansion, the omnibuses, horse railways, commuter trains, and electric trolleys pulled settled regions outward two to four times more distant form city centers than they were in the premodern era. In 1850, for example, the borders of Boston lay scarcely two miles from the old business district; by the turn of the century the radius extended ten miles. Now those who could afford it could live far removed from the old city center and still commute there for work, shopping, and entertainment. The new accessibility of land around the periphery of almost every major city sparked an explosion of real estate development and fueled what we now know as urban sprawl. Between 1890 and 1920, for example, some 250,000 new residential lots were recorded within the borders of Chicago, most of them located in outlying areas. Over the same period, another 550,000 were plotted outside the city limits but within the metropolitan area. Anxious to take advantage of the possibilities of commuting, real estate developers added 800,000 potential building sites to the Chicago region in just thirty years – lots that could have housed five to six million people. ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
Of course, many were never occupied; there was always a huge surplus of subdivided, but vacant, land around Chicago and other cities. These excesses underscore a feature of residential expansion related to the growth of mass transportation: urban sprawl was essentially unplanned. It was carried out by thousands of small investors who paid little heed to coordinated land use or to future land users. Those who purchased and prepared land for residential purposes, particularly land near or outside city borders where transit lines and middle-class inhabitants were anticipated, did so to create demand as much as to respond to it. Chicago is a prime example of this process. Real estate subdivision there proceeded much faster than population growth. ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

A. ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
4. C(第二段中以芝加哥城市例子说明)土地开发超过人口增长速度。 A. B. ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

The tourist trade is booming. With all this coming and going, you’d expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a moderate cost. What was once the ‘grand tour’, reserved for only the very rich, is now within everybody’s grasp. The package tour and chartered flights are not to be sneered at. Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which the lords and ladies on grand tours in the old days couldn’t have dreamed of. But what’s the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other?¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They deliberately set out to protect their clients from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads a cosseted, sheltered life. He lives at international hotels, where he eats his international food and sips his international drink while he gazes at the natives from a distance. Conducted tours to places of interest are carefully censored. The tourist is allowed to see only what the organizers want him to see and no more. A strict schedule makes it impossible for the tourist to wander off on his own; and anyway, language is always a barrier, so he is only too happy to be protected in this way. At its very worst, this leads to a new and hideous kind of colonization. The summer quarters of the inhabitants of the cite universitaire: are temporarily reestablished on the island of Corfu. Blackpool is recreated at Torremolinos where the traveler goes not to eat paella, but fish and chips.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the persistence of national stereotypes. We don’t see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe they are. You can test this for yourself. Take five nationalities, say, French, German, English, American and Italian. Now in your mind, match them with these five adjectives: musical, amorous, cold, pedantic, native. Far from providing us with any insight into the national characteristics of the peoples just mentioned, these adjectives actually act as barriers. So when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm your preconceptions. You come away with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression that, say, ‘Anglo-Saxons are hypocrites’ of that ‘Latin peoples shout a lot’. You only have to make a few foreign friends to understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are. But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you?¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
Carried to an extreme, stereotypes can be positively dangerous. Wild generalizations stir up racial hatred and blind us to the basic fact—how trite it sounds! – that all people are human. We are all similar to each other and at the same time all unique.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
A. ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

Strictly Ban smoking¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
If you smoke and you still don’t believe that there’s a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. No one will accuse you of hypocrisy. Let us just say that you are suffering from a bad case of wishful thinking. This needn’t make you too uncomfortable because you are in good company. Whenever the subject of smoking and health is raised, the governments of most countries hear no evil, see no evil and smell no evil. Admittedly, a few governments have taken timid measures. In Britain for instance, cigarette advertising has been banned on television. The conscience of the nation is appeased, while the population continues to puff its way to smoky, cancerous death.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
You don’t have to look very far to find out why the official reactions to medical findings have been so lukewarm. The answer is simply money. Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It’s almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while the authorities point out ever so discreetly that smoking may, conceivable, be harmful, it doesn’t do to shout too loudly about it.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
This is surely the most short-sighted policy you could imagine. While money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better-off if smoking were banned altogether.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
Of course, we are not ready for such a drastic action. But if the governments of the world were honestly concerned about the welfare of their peoples, you’d think they’d conduct aggressive anti-smoking campaigns. Far from it! The tobacco industry is allowed to spend staggering sums on advertising. Its advertising is as insidious as it is dishonest. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lungs early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisement always depict virile, clean-shaven young men. They suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense!¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
For a start, governments could begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco advertising and should then conduct anti-smoking advertising campaigns of their own. Smoking should be banned in all public places like theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of the dire consequences of taking up the habit. A horrific warning – say, a picture of a death’s head – should be included in every packet of cigarettes that is sold. As individuals, we are certainly weak, but if governments acted honestly and courageously, they could protect us from ourselves.¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

A. ¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜

¸&def²Z+¢Ì¯forum.pre-mbaclub.como°ð‰Þϙ˜
